This project explore the sectional quality within an existing building. The expansion of the SCI-ARC library seeks to create a unique relationship between the existing and the new, while maintaining a high level of hierarchy. The new expansion is to be constructed through the center skylight opening of the library floor. The design is intrested in breaking the linearity of the structural system while maintaingthe overall form of SCI Arc. By utilizing new materailty and allows for more views, the new addition will become the focal point of this institution.

1. By looking into the structural system of SCI-ARC and using the Bay system as a unit to define the grid for the new space.

2. Break down the linearity of the structural system where the new expansion meets the existing with load barring walls protruding out of the existing structural system.

3. Lift the new expansion as a floating mass that is programmatically well equipped for maximum performance.

4. By lifting the mass up, an interesting space evolved in between the existing area and the expansion. I defined this space as an active place for public activity and where circulation takes place.
